| Following the departure of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor to Derby County, the Pools board handed former Wolves and Crewe player Gus McLean the task of continuing the duo's work. His first season could hardly have gone better, with Pools winning promotion for the first time. McLean stayed for two more years before leaving his post in 1970. |
